This week, I can begin my main project for my internship at the National Collections Program (NCP). We were waiting for approval to use specific programs necessary for the project. While waiting, I learned new skills, including data analysis. Although I have experience with data analysis in historical research, I have been exploring various applications for it. Even though I couldn’t access new programs until now, I reviewed files the NCP collected during multiple emergency events. By examining these files, I developed new data analysis skills by searching for information I typically wouldn’t have pursued based on my historical research background. Hopefully, in my future research endeavors, I can use these new skills to research historical topics more effectively. Additionally, I’ve improved my communication skills. Previously, I was afraid to speak up in class, worried my ideas wouldn’t be well-received. However, I gained confidence after meeting with the NCP and others involved in the project. The other day, when my mentors were uncertain whether something would work for the program, I shared my insights based on my previous experience. They appreciated my input, which further boosted my confidence. I hope these skills will enhance my historical research and future courses. However, these are not the only skills I will learn during my internship.

            Now that I have started the project, I plan to develop new skills from the programs I will use. One of those skills is using Excel more efficiently. I have used Excel in other projects in this certificate, most notably in making a network map for my first project. However, it took a lot of work. Since I am using Excel to create a table for the mapping program, I want to get more used to the program and be able to use it more efficiently in the future. Another skill I plan to develop is how to use mapping features. I used a mapping feature in the form of network maps, but only sparingly. I was curious to know which features of the programs would be the most beneficial for me in finding the information that I needed. Using the mapping feature for my main project, I want to learn what features would be used to find specific details to use maps for my future research effectively. I hope that these skills I will learn and the ones I have already started to learn will help me in my future endeavors in my historical career.
